So far the coronavirus has a lower mortality rate than the flu, so I wouldn’t worry too much

With the sheer amount of passenger travel between California and China, I’m surprised that there are only 2 cases this far into the outbreak.
Stay safe and don’t go to crowded places popular with Chinese people. I’ve authorised myself to racially profile my own race when choosing places to hang out. I’ll re-evaluate this strategy after the lunar year holidays when everyone is done travelling.

I was in rancho Cucamonga Wednesday Thursday and Friday, and then flew back to DC metro. Country scheduled to collapse

This is not true from the numbers I’ve seen. Last I checked it was like 2% which is 2-3 orders of magnitude more than the flu (and comparable to the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 100 million people). Maybe that has gone down as the number of inflected people grows, but of course that doesn’t mean that those new cases won’t be fatal.
This is no ebola, but it certainly seems to be worse than the flu from a mortality standpoint (hopefully transmission is harder).

You’re probably fine, but if you die, can I have your stuff (easily sterilized items only please)?

I was surprised by the number of people wearing facemasks there , usually it’s only a couple, but a good chunk of the patrons were wearing them

Alot of people are taking sick days at work. Considering I work next door to LAX, maybe I should do the same just as a precaution

One of our Oppo members is a medical research scientist. I asked him about this virus, and this is what he had to say:
I checked on the CDC website before answering, and it’s pretty much what I thought. This is a newly isolated member of the coronavirus family, which produces flu-like symptoms. Evidence seems to point to person-to-person transmission, and propensity for aerosol transmission (through sneezing and coughing) doesn’t seem to be fully determined.
The problem with viruses like these is not that they are objectively “worse” than say normal flu strains that are already in our population. It’s more that they are new, and therefore the population is susceptible. Public health response is typically going to be to try and isolate infected people and determine its origins to limit spread, not because it’s a threat to species survival like a 28 Days Later type of zombie virus or a Mutaba-like virus from a Dustin Hoffman movie, but more because it’s a shitty illness that causes sickness and misery and can end up killing a percentage of infected patients. No one needs another of those.
So, the thing to do is not to panic, but to make sure everyone practices good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently. Use hand sanitizer when you come in contact with foreign surfaces in public or shake hands with someone (who may not have washed his hands), and if you’re sick, stay home. If you’re really sick, see your doctor. If you have to go out, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

Probably an overreaction, though the fact the Chinese are being so aggressive with quarantines is a bit scary. Hopefully it just for domestic political consumption, as opposed to them massively under-reporting the number who are sick.

This is all a conspiracy to stick you with the loan so that he doesn’t have to pay for it.
